The Beautiful Women of Plus Size Modeling 3 - Raven Symone, Emme, Charlotte Coyle, Sara Ramírez and more

Here is my third Hub about the beautiful women of plus size modeling.
Although almost all of them are actually models, I did throw in a couple of actresses at the end that I thought deserved to be mentioned.

Barbara Brickner
Barbara Brickner didn't start out to be a plus size model.
She was planning a career in country music and Christian pop, but she ran into a judge at a singing competition in Seattle who told her she should look into becoming a large-size model.
Barbara was a bit taken aback my that, but she looked into it and this size 14 lady wound up working for Lands End, Eddie Bauer, Target, Nordstrom, Federated Group, Elena Miro and in Canada for Reitmans.

Charlotte Coyle
Plus size model Charlotte Coyle was born in Derry, Northern Ireland.
This five foot ten, one hundred and ninety pound beauty has worked for Torrid plus size clothing, Marks & Spencer and the UK version of Good Housekeeping magazine.
In the Channel 4 documentary titled "Fat Beauty Contest", Charlotte organized Britain's first beauty contest for plus-size women.
She is represented by Close Models in the U.K., and by the W Ten-20 division of the Wilhelmina agency in New York.

Joanne Borgella
Singer, songwriter, actress, jewelry designer and plus size model Joanne Borgella was born on May 29th, 1982 in Oyster Bay Cove, New York.
She was the first winner of Mo'Nique's Fat Chance pageant on the Oxygen network as "Miss F.A.T." in 2005.
In 2008, Joanne was a top 24 contestant on the seventh season of American Idol.
She is represented by Wilhelmina Model's W Ten-20 division in New York City, Miami and LA.
Joanne has done work for Torrid plus size clothing, Ashley Stewart, Wal-Mart, Kohls, Seventeen, Essence, InStyle and Procter & Gamble.

Emme

Emme, or Melissa Aronson or Emme Jacob was born in 1963.
She was born in New York, raised in Saudi Arabia and then moved back to the US.
Before she was a teen, her stepfather drew on her thighs and stomach with a magic marker to show her how she needed to lose weight.
Despite that show of wonderful parenting skills, Emme went on to Syracuse University on a full athletic scholarship, she joined the Rowing team, was inducted into the Syracuse University Orange Plus Hall of Fame for her significant contribution to women's athletics and to the sport of rowing, got invited to the U.S. Olympic Team trials, and went on to become a reporter and anchor for KNAZ-TV, a NBC affiliate .
She was named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" twice (1994 and 1999) and one of the "Most Fascinating Women of the Year" by Ladies' Home Journal in 1997.
In 1999, Ladies' Home Journal selected her as one of its "Most Important Women in America"

Johanna Dray
France's Johanna Dray was the first plus-size model in Europe to launch a plus-size clothing line, named Tend@nces en clair par Johanna Dray.
This five foot eleven model captures that 1940s and 1950s look perfectly.

Justine Legault
Canadian Justine Legault is a size 14, stands 5'9 and her measurements are 36d-31-46.
She's appeared in Coup de pouce, French Châtelaine and Moi & Cie magazines
Justine is represented by Scoop Models in Montreal and Ford Models in Toronto.

Anansa Sims
Anansa Sims wanted to be a model, so she lost weight, but couldn't get a job.
Then she gained weight and became a popular plus sized model.
She was one of the 12 to 14 size models in the famous Glamour magazine photo.
Her mother, Beverly Johnson was the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974

Fluvia Lucerda
I couldn't find much info on Brazilian plus size model Fluvia Lucerda, but I thought she needed to be included in here.

Sara Ramírez
Even though she isn't technically a model. I thought that Mexican-American actress and singer Sara Ramírez deserved a mention in here.
In 2005, Sara won aTony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as The Lady of the Lake in Monty Python's Spamalot.
She is also a member of the cast of Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Calliope 'Callie' Torres.

Raven Symone
And finally, another young lady that although she isn't technically a model, I think she deserves mention here.
Raven Symone Christina Pearman was born on December 10th, 1985 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Despite her talents (she's an actress, singer-songwriter, fashion designer, and television producer), Raven has taken some heat through out her career because of her weight.

The majority of women in the USA were a size 12 and larger...your article is very timely in highlighting the beautiful plus size model. And thanks for your comment!

Just read all three of your plus size modelling hubs and they are very good. It's great to read about women who have often faced adversity but have still managed to accomplish their dreams. The photos are all beautiful too :D

I admire what you are doing, but i just have one thing i really wish these women would stop being referred to as "plus size" or any similar label that tags them as being "overweight" these women are the norm they are not fat. They are far More beautiful than the sickly skinny twigs that commonly dominate modeling and pop culture in general. yet they keep being shuffled into this category that sounds like some sort of alternative spin off or something. Some barely even look like they are above average in weight.. I dont see how this category isnt in some ways a tiny bit derogatory. I have always thought that the trend toward super skinny was not only sickening, false, and contrived, but is extremely disturbing. Fashioned by a small handful of very warped detached power players who would dictate trend for the sole purpose of exercising their own power and warped tastes... Media has become a tool to Create Promote and push people toward trends, instead of being a venue that is suited toward what people themselves want. It is sick how it uses its power to dictate taste. Pop culture Is basically a modern day caste system, when people are made to feel like they are less, because some warped arrogant power drunk big shot, dictates his/her own own image of what is good or bad, cool or not.. sexy or unattractive.

I saw a Thesis paper many years back that made the overwhelming arguement that the reason pop culture favored those it did.. was because the industries with the most influence were dominated by homosexuals. and they simply had tastes that leaned toward androgynous looking models. IT was unbeleivably convincing , the evidence was overwhelming.. it supplies lists of industry giants.. surveys from the general public, and 100s of photo comparisons that prooved beyond any doubt that models were chosen because they looked like young boys, firstly and second because they didnt distract the eye from the clothing they were modeling.. So basically they were chosen partially because they were not appealing enough to the majority. but this trend spilled over into popular media somehow, i wish i could find the paper.. it was enlightening to say the least and really exposed the disturbing aspects of fashion, trends, media and its influence on the masses. anyway Its SOOO good to see these models getting out there, I can honestly say that i have never seen such true beauty in media until now.
