Scream Queens 3 - The History of Horror Films
74Scream Queens 3 - The History of Horror Films
Here we are again with another chapter of the women of horror, science fiction, mystery, suspense and thriller movies.
Again a few of these may seem out of left field, but even though the actress may be mainstream, they have a lot of fans because of their forays into the darker side.
Scream Queen - Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone was born Sharon Yvonne Stone on March 10th, 1958, in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Although she is probably best remembered as Catherine Trammell in the thriller Basic Instinct and Basic Instinct 2 (a movie that could be considered a horror, kinda like Catwoman could, which by the way, she was in as well), Sharon has appeared in some horror flicks as well.
She made her acting debut in the 1980 film, Stardust Memories as "The Girl on the Train", then had an uncredited role in Les Uns et les autres before going into the Scream Queen role as Lana Marcus in 1981's Deadly Blessing.
Deadly Blessing has one of my all time "Make me unsee it" moments. If you saw the film, you probably know what I'm talking about.
Scream Queen Cred:
Deadly Blessing (1981) as Lana Marcus
Total Recall (1990) as Lori Quaid
Basic Instinct (1992) as Catherine Trammell
Diabolique (1996) as Nicole Horner
Cold Creek Manor (2003) as Leah Tilson
Basic Instinct 2 (2006) as Catherine Trammell
Scream Queen - Naomi Watts
Although she has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, Naomi Watts has some Scream Queen cred of her own.
She's Australian, though she was born in Shoreham, Kent, England on September 28, 1968.
Naomi had her acting debut in 1986, but she made her horror debut in 1996's Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering.
Notice how many of these ladies were in the Children of the Corn series?
She even got to reprise one of the most famous Scream Queen roles in 2005's King Kong, and rumor has it that she'll be doing that again in the (possible) remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
Scream Queen Cred:
Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering (1996) as Grace Rhodes
Mulholland Drive (2001) as Betty Elms/Diane Selwyn
The Shaft aka Down (2001) as Jennifer Evans
The Ring (2002) as Rachel Keller
King Kong (2005) as Ann Darrow
The Ring Two (2005) Rachel Keller
Funny Games (2008) as Ann Farber
Fair Game (2010) as Valerie Plame
The Birds (2011 rumored) as Melanie Daniels
Scream Queen - Sarah Michelle Gellar
You'd think after battling the forces of darkness from 1997 to 2003 as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah would have had her fill of horror.
But no, even as Buffy started, she appeared in two modern horror classics, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2.
Okay they may not actually be classics but still.
Scream Queen Cred:
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) as Helen Shivers
Scream 2 (1997) as Casey "Cici" Cooper
The Grudge (2004) as Karen Davis
The Grudge 2 (2006) as Karen Davis
The Return (2006) as Joanna
Possession (2009) as Jessica
I guess I could also count Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) here, and maybe even Southland Tales (2007).
Scream Queen - Tara Reid
Tara Reid was born on November 8, 1975, in Wyckoff, New Jersey.
Worth noting here is that Tara attended Professional Children's School in Manhattan (a privately-owned, college preparatory school) along with future Scream Queens Christina Ricci and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Tara made her debut in 1987's A Return to Salem's Lot.
Scream Queen Cred:
A Return to Salem's Lot (1987) as Amanda
Urban Legend (1998) as Sasha
Devil's Pond (2003) as Julianne
Alone in the Dark (2005) as Aline Cedrac
The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005) as Lola Byrne
Incubus (2006) Jay
Vipers (2008) Nicky Swift
Land of Canaan (2010) as Amy
The Fields (2011) as Bonnie
Scream Queen - Milla Jovovich
The beautiful Milla Jovovich was born on December 17, 1975 in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union.
She made her big screen debut in 1988's Two Moon Junction as Samantha Delongpre.
But she has gone down the "Sigourney Weaver" path as a Scream Queen, kicking butts and taking names.
Scream Queen Cred:
The Fifth Element (1997) as Leeloo
Resident Evil (2002) Alice
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) as Alice
Ultraviolet (2006) as Violet Song jat Shariff
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) as Alice
A Perfect Getaway (2009) Cydney Anderson
The Fourth Kind (2009) Abbey Tyler
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) as Alice
Faces in the Crowd (2011)
Scream Queen - Meagan Good
Actress and sometimes film producer (she has her own production company, Freedom Bridge Entertainment), Meagan Good was born on August 8, 1981 in Panorama City, California.
Meagan started out in small roles on TV before she made the jump to the big screen in 1995's Friday.
Although horror isn't what she's mainly known for, she had done a few films.
Scream Queen Cred:
Venom (2005) as Cece
One Missed Call (2008) as Shelley Baum
Saw V (2008) as Luba Gibbs
The Unborn (2009) as Romy
Scream Queen - Ali Larter
Ali Larter was born on February 28, 1976 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Like Meagan, Ali had several roles on TV before hitting the big screen in the 1999 film, House on Haunted Hill.
Of course you may know her better as Niki / Jessica Sanders / Tracy Strauss on the TV show Heroes.
Scream Queen Cred:
House on Haunted Hill (1999) as Sara Wolfe
Final Destination (2000) as Clear Rivers
Final Destination 2 (2003) as Clear Rivers
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) as Claire Redfield
Obsessed (2009) as Lisa
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2011) as Claire Redfield
UFO (2011 rumored) as Col. Virginia Lake
Scream Queen - Christina Ricci
Although Christina Ricci hasn't made that many horror films, she's widely regarded as a Scream Queen.
She was born on February 12, 1980 (notice a lot of these ladies seem to be born in February?) in Santa Monica, California.
As I mentioned earlier, she attended Professional Children's School in Manhattan with Tara Reid and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Her big screen debut was in the 1990 film, Mermaids.
But in 1991, The Addams Family sent her in the Scream Queen direction.
Scream Queen Cred:
The Addams Family (1991) as Wednesday Addams
Addams Family Values (1993) as Wednesday Addams
Casper (1995) as Kathleen 'Kat' Harvey
Little Red Riding Hood (1997) as Little Red Riding Hood
Sleepy Hollow (1999) Katrina van Tassel
Bless The Child (2000) as Cheri Post
The Gathering (2002) as Cassie Grant
Monster (2003) as Selby Wall
Cursed (2005) as Ellie Myers
After.Life (2009) as Anna Taylor

Another great list!
Nice article!
The legendary Sharon Stone was also in the hilarious shocker Scissors, where she is trapped in a creepy apartment and spends the whole movie shrieking. (Also her unintentionally funny screamed lines in King Solomon's Mines deserve a mention!)
I reckon Melissa George and Radha Mitchell have now overtaken Naomi as the greatest Aussie Scream Queens :)

I hadn't thought of them in quite that way, but your observation is so true.
