Cutey Honey - The Android With a Heart

Cutie Honey was the first female hero of a shonen manga (young person's comic) series.
She was created in 1973 by Japanese manga artist Go Nagai (Devilman, Mazinger Z) and made her debut in volume 41 of of Shonen Champion.
Cutie Honey has proven to be quite popular and has grown into her own media franchise which includes several manga series, two Japanese animation TV series, two OVA (Original video animation) series, two drama CDs (audio dramas), and two live action adaptations (a movie and a TV series).

While Cutie has changed a bit through out her career, but some things remain the same.
She is an ordinary young girlĀ  named Honey Kisaragi who can transform into a buxom red-haired (or pink haired) warrior known as Cutie Honey.
Most of the time Cutie can transform into several different variations of herself like a biker, singer, stewardess, policewoman etc.
Go Nagai has said that this was inspired by Bannai Tarao (a detective who could take on seven different faces), 7-Color Mask (a superhero with 7 different identities) and Rainbowman (who had 7 different superhero forms).

And another common thread is that when Cutie transforms from one form to another, she yells "Honey Flash!" and temporarily loses all her clothing between transformations.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that Cutie is an android?

Like I said, Cutie appeared in volume 41 of of Shonen Champion, October 1, 1973.
Twelve days later on October 13, 1973, the Cutie Honey anime TV series began.
In the series, after her father is killed by the "Panther Claw" organization, Honey Kisaragi discovers that she is actually an android implanted with a device that can transform her into the sword-wielding Cutie Honey, Hurricane Honey, Misty Honey, Idol Honey, Flash Honey and Fancy Honey.

In 2004, a live-action film adaptation of Cutie Honey was produced by Gainax.
The film starred Eriko Sato as the title character and she takes on the "Panther Claw" organization like in the manga and anime.
In the movie her foes consist of, Gold Claw, Cobalt Claw, Scarlet Claw, Black Claw and Sister Jill.
The movie also brings in Natsuko Aki and Seiji Hayami from the manga and anime.
The creator of Cutie, Go Nagai, has a brief cameo, as does Japanese singer Koda Kumi.
Cutie Honey was released on April 17, 2007 in the US, direct-to-DVD.

Three years later, Cutie Honey The Live, premiered on TV Tokyo on October 2, 2007.
The TV series starred Japanese Idol Mikie Hara as Cutie.
The television series introduced a lot of changes to the story, including giving Honey two "sisters" with powers like Cutie, but with very different personalities.

Of course, first you had their version of Cutie Honey.

Then you had the brooding, introverted and anti-social Miki Saotome/Sister Miki, played by Ayame Misaki.
Miki could turn into a blue armored form and had a special connection with Cutie's "father" Doctor Kisaragi.

Then you have Yuki Kenmochi/Sister Yuki, played by Makoto Takeda.
Yuki could turn into a white armored form, and she also had a special relationship with Doctor Kisaragi.

In addition to the new characters, the TV series also brought in Seiji Hayami and Natsuko Aki from the mangas and animes.

Go Nagai, the creator of Cutie Honey, fittingly plays her "father" Doctor Kisaragi, in the series.

The Panther Claw organization showed up in the TV series as well, and it was much different than the manga, anime and movie versions.
In the TV show, the organization was nmore like an evil corporation and was run by four bosses...Yuji Nakajo (Kohei Murakami), Duke Watari (Mark Musashi), Mayumi Karasugawa (Erika Oda) and Hiromi Tanaka (Eri Fuse).

There's a lot of these manga cartoons around and they are slowly creeping into the US stores. Being a Final Fantasy fan I like to see more of these appearing, especially if they start making decent movies!

Great HUb!

I saw my first Anime magazine in 1993 while working at the Brown/Hilton Hotel(it was left by a Japanese tourist) although I do not read or speak Japanese I could discern from the illustrations that it was an "Action" type heroine story. I must get a Cutie Honey DVD.
